The Turkish president also highlighted the evolving dynamics of the war, noting that Zelensky’s visit came at a critical time.

Türkiye’s Role in Peace Efforts

  • In March 2022, Türkiye hosted direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul.
  • Türkiye played a key role in launching the Black Sea Grain Initiative, ensuring critical food supplies reached global markets.
  • Over the past three years, Türkiye has engaged in direct diplomatic initiatives with both Russia and Ukraine at all levels.

Erdoğan also acknowledged the diplomatic efforts led by former U.S. President Donald Trump to facilitate a rapid and negotiated end to the war, stating that Türkiye’s three-year diplomatic approach aligns with these new peace initiatives.

Given its active diplomacy and history of mediation, Türkiye stands as an ideal host for potential future peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S.

Bilateral Relations and Economic Cooperation

Despite the challenges posed by war, Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with Ukraine, reiterating their shared goal of reaching $10 billion in bilateral trade.

Additionally, he commended Zelensky’s efforts in defending the rights of Crimean Tatars, emphasizing Türkiye’s ongoing support for their well-being and expressing hope for further steps in this direction.
