Türkiye and Indonesia have finalized a historic agreement for the sale of 48 Kaan fifth-generation fighter jets, marking a significant milestone in their defense cooperation. The deal, signed at the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 in Istanbul, positions Indonesia as the first international buyer of Türkiye’s indigenously developed aircraft.
The contract, reportedly valued at approximately $10 billion, was formalized in a ceremony attended by high-level representatives from both nations. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz celebrated the agreement, stating on X, “Under the vision and leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, our defense industry continues to reach new heights. This Kaan agreement with Indonesia strengthens our strategic partnership and showcases Türkiye’s growing capabilities in advanced aerospace technology.”
The deal encompasses the production and delivery of the Kaan jets over a 10-year period, alongside plans to establish new facilities in Indonesia to support localization efforts. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), which already maintains an office in Indonesia, will spearhead these initiatives, fostering a broader industrial partnership between the two nations.
The Kaan, a next-generation warplane developed over nearly a decade, made its public debut in 2023 and completed its maiden test flight in early 2024. Serial production is slated to commence in 2028. The second and third prototypes, featuring internal weapons bays, aerial refueling systems, and minor airframe enhancements, are scheduled for their first flights in April and July 2026, respectively.
This landmark agreement not only bolsters Türkiye’s defense industry but also cements its growing influence in the global aerospace market, while deepening strategic ties with Indonesia. Financial details remain undisclosed, but the deal underscores the increasing demand for Türkiye’s advanced military technology.
