Ankara, June 15, 2025 – Turkey’s wind energy sector has achieved a remarkable milestone, with its installed wind power capacity reaching 13,391 megawatts (MW) as of May 2025, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in commemoration of Global Wind Day.

In 2002, Turkey’s wind energy capacity stood at a modest 19 MW. Over the past two decades, the country has made significant strides in transforming renewable energy sources, particularly wind, into viable investments through targeted policies and initiatives. Key among these are the Renewable Energy Support Mechanism (YEKDEM), which provides purchase guarantees for electricity generated from renewable sources, and the Renewable Energy Resource Zone (YEKA) auctions, which have fostered a competitive market environment. Additionally, efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing of wind turbine components have further strengthened the sector.

These initiatives have yielded impressive results. By May 2025, Turkey’s wind power capacity had surged to 13,391 MW, a substantial leap from its early beginnings. Electricity production from wind energy has also seen exponential growth, rising from just 62 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2001 to 36,627 GWh by the end of 2024—a 590-fold increase.

A Thriving Wind Energy Ecosystem

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar highlighted the transformative impact of these developments. “Through our strategic policies, we have not only multiplied our wind energy capacity but also created a robust ecosystem that employs 20,000 people,” Bayraktar said. “In 2024, wind power accounted for 10.5% of Turkey’s total electricity production, underscoring its critical role in our energy mix.”

Turkey is currently home to approximately 4,000 active wind turbines. The country has also made significant progress in developing its domestic wind energy industry. Components such as towers, rotor blades, and generators are now produced locally, with around 65% of wind turbine parts manufactured in Turkey. This has not only reduced reliance on imports but also positioned the country as an exporter of wind energy equipment.

Ambitious Goals for the Future

Looking ahead, the Ministry’s 2024-2028 strategic plan sets an ambitious target of increasing Turkey’s wind power capacity to 19,300 MW by 2028. Furthermore, the government aims to develop 5 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2035, signaling a commitment to diversifying and expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

Celebrating Global Wind Day

Every year, June 15 is observed as Global Wind Day, an occasion to highlight the environmental, economic, and social benefits of wind energy while raising awareness about sustainable energy solutions. The day also serves as a platform to showcase advancements in wind energy technologies and their contributions to a greener future.

Turkey’s progress in wind energy underscores its dedication to sustainable development and energy security. With continued investments and policy support, the country is poised to further solidify its position as a leader in renewable energy in the region.
