Turkey’s growing influence in Syria and its recent strategic moves have stirred unease in Greece. Following the announcement of a potential maritime delimitation agreement between Turkey and Syria, Greek commentators have expressed apprehension, with some accusing Turkey of acting as if Syria were under its control.

Greek newspaper Kathimerini featured an article by columnist Nikos Konstandaras, who criticized Turkey’s legitimate and strategic actions in Syria. Konstandaras described Turkey’s regional presence as “greedy” and “opportunistic,” reflecting Greece’s discomfort with Ankara’s increasing assertiveness.

“Secret Ties with Golani”

Konstandaras also commented on the visit of Turkish intelligence chief İbrahim Kalın and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Damascus, claiming that this move underscored Turkey’s covert relationships with figures such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani. The columnist alleged, “Golani personally escorted Turkey’s intelligence chief during his visit to Damascus,” suggesting unverified connections between Turkey and the HTS leader.

“Trump’s Praise for Erdoğan Triggered Turkish Ambitions”

Konstandaras further highlighted the international praise for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, particularly from former U.S. President Donald Trump, as a factor emboldening Turkey’s regional ambitions. He remarked, “Trump’s praise for Erdoğan and international accolades have fueled Turkey’s opportunistic instincts.”

The writer also accused Turkey of leveraging its diplomatic engagement with the U.S. to press for the elimination of the YPG/PKK in northern Syria.

Maritime Delimitation Talks Raise Alarm

The prospect of a maritime agreement between Turkey and Syria has also unsettled Athens. Konstandaras claimed, “Turkey’s swift announcement of its intent to negotiate maritime borders with Syria is a move that clearly undermines Cyprus’s interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

“Turkey Acts as If Syria Belongs to Them”

Konstandaras concluded his piece with a stark critique of Turkey’s approach to Syria, stating, “In just three weeks, Turkey’s initial hesitancy transformed into the arrogance of ownership. Having already occupied part of the country, the Turks acted as though Syria were theirs and signaled that they would dictate the region’s future developments.”

The article also warned of the risks and responsibilities Turkey might face in asserting its influence over Syria, adding, “While dealing with a strong, centralized Syrian government is one thing, being drawn into an endless conflict at the border is another.”

This rhetoric underscores Greece’s growing concern over Turkey’s assertive foreign policy, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
