Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, accompanied by Chief of General Staff General Metin Gürak and senior military commanders, conducted a comprehensive inspection at Çıldıroba in Kilis near the Syrian border.
During a video teleconference with commanders from domestic and cross-border units, Güler discussed critical security issues, cross-border operations, and recent developments in Syria.
The Sole Army Fighting ISIS Face-to-Face
Minister Güler underscored the significant threats posed by the PKK/YPG and ISIS, which gained ground following the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011. Highlighting Turkey’s heavy sacrifices, he said, “Before Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkey paid a high price. Terror attacks in cities like Reyhanlı, Suruç, Ankara, and Istanbul claimed hundreds of lives and injured thousands. In response, the Turkish Armed Forces became the only army to fight ISIS face-to-face to ensure the safety of our borders and citizens. During Operation Euphrates Shield, 67 of our brave soldiers were martyred.”
Güler emphasized the success of operations like Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch, and Peace Spring in dismantling the so-called “terror corridor” and efforts to help normalize life in these regions.
“Terror Will Be Completely Eradicated from Syria”
Speaking on the evolving situation in Syria, Güler noted, “The Syrian people are shaping their own future. The Syrian National Army has played a pivotal role by liberating areas like Tal Rifaat and Manbij from terrorists. We will work closely with the new administration in Syria to ensure its territorial integrity, political unity, and the security of its people.”
Güler reiterated Turkey’s determination to clear all terrorist-held areas, stating, “We will continue our operations resolutely to eliminate every terror element beyond our borders.”
Restoring Syria’s Demographic Balance
Güler criticized efforts by the PKK/YPG to alter the demographic structure in regions under their control. “Once the pressure of these terrorists is lifted and local populations return to their homes, the true demographic makeup of Syria will be restored. Turkey will not allow any terror organization to have a place in Syria’s future,” he declared.
Operations in Northern Iraq: A Parallel Fight
Touching on operations in northern Iraq, Güler highlighted the achievements of Operation Claw-Lock in the Zap region. “The movement of terrorists has been restricted, and the security of our borders has been reinforced. Shelters and caves used by terrorists continue to be neutralized. Surrendering to Turkish justice is now their only option, or they will be eliminated,” he warned.
Turkey’s Key Role in Regional Stability
Minister Güler underscored Turkey’s critical role in ensuring regional stability. “Achieving a lasting solution in Syria requires all stakeholders to cooperate with Turkey. The international community recognizes Turkey as the key to resolution,” he said.
He also praised the Turkish Armed Forces for their role in fostering peace and stability worldwide. “As we move toward 2025 with ambitious goals, our military’s heroic efforts, combined with the resilience and sacrifices of our nation, will continue to yield great successes,” Güler concluded.
Ending on a hopeful note, Güler extended his New Year wishes to all military personnel, reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to regional and global peace.
