Continued Progress in Helicopter Deliveries

The T70 helicopters are developed using the Sikorsky S70 platform and are being produced under a licensed model in Turkey. Various branches of the military, including the Land Forces, Air Force, Special Forces, and security agencies, are among the planned users of these helicopters. This initiative represents a significant investment in enhancing Turkey’s defense capabilities.

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has successfully delivered the first T70 helicopter after completing rigorous final assembly and qualification tests. Notably, this testing involved Turkey’s domestic avionics systems, transmission, landing gear, and dynamic components, showcasing the country’s growing technological expertise in defense manufacturing.

The Large-Scale Production Commitment

The T70 General Purpose Helicopter Program plans to produce a total of 109 helicopters over the next decade, with deliveries slated for six different military users. The program is a collaborative effort led by TAI, with key contributions from subcontractors such as Sikorsky, ASELSAN, TEI, and Alp Aviation. This partnership underscores the importance of local production in meeting Turkey’s defense needs.

Under this program, TAI will manage the manufacturing of crucial components such as the cabin, cockpit, tail cone, and main rotor blades, as well as oversee final assembly and logistics support. Meanwhile, ASELSAN will handle the integration of essential avionics, and other partners will contribute to the engine and dynamic parts, highlighting a comprehensive approach to helicopter production.

Meeting Domestic Demand and Challenges

The Turkish General Purpose Helicopter Program aims not only to fulfill the military’s operational needs but also to cater to civilian requirements. This ambitious project represents a strategic move to bolster local defense manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.

However, the T-70 program has faced some challenges, leading to a temporary halt in certain phases. Despite these setbacks, Turkey remains dedicated to advancing its helicopter production capabilities and ensuring the sustainability of its defense sector in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
