Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reiterated his call for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, stressing that the organization must be strengthened to fulfill its founding mission of safeguarding global peace and justice.
In a video message to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN’s founding, Erdoğan congratulated the organization’s members and noted that since its establishment in 1945, the UN has achieved significant successes in maintaining global peace, security, and fostering international cooperation.
However, he emphasized that the UN must evolve to remain effective:
“It is clear that the United Nations needs serious reform to continue fulfilling its assigned duties. Especially in the face of the oppression the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza, have suffered for years, we must transform the UN into a platform that truly represents global justice. This is a shared responsibility.”
Reforming for Justice and Peace
Erdoğan called for the same determination shown by the UN’s founding members eight decades ago to be applied today in strengthening the organization so it can once again uphold international peace, prosperity, mutual trust, and solidarity.
He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to actively participating in all reform initiatives, including the “UN 80 Initiative” launched under the leadership of the Secretary-General, aimed at making the organization more effective, efficient, and financially robust.
Reiterating his well-known motto “The world is bigger than five”, which advocates for reforming the UN Security Council, Erdoğan added:
“We say once again: A fairer world is possible. I invite all member states to take urgent steps to restore the United Nations as a beacon of hope for humanity.”
Concluding his remarks, President Erdoğan expressed hope that the UN’s 80th anniversary would bring positive outcomes for all humanity, extending his “most heartfelt greetings and respect” to the participants of the commemoration.
