Patriot Air Defense System Sale to Romania Approved
**The United States Department of State has officially green-lighted the sale of a Patriot air defense system to Romania through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. This pivotal decision marks a significant step in bolstering Romania’s defense capabilities as a NATO member, with the estimated deal valued at $280 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency submitted the necessary certification to Congress on April 28, 2025, regarding this potential transaction.
The proposed package encompasses a range of essential components, including one AN/MPQ-65 radar set, an AN/MSQ-132 Engagement Control Station, two M903 launch stations, and a power plant. Additionally, it includes a PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement launcher conversion kit, along with generators, spare parts, a KG-250X encryption system, and an AN/TPX-57v1 friend or foe identification system. Furthermore, the deal provides for engineering and logistics support services.
Romania’s Previous Acquisitions and Defense Developments
Romania has been enhancing its air defense capabilities since 2017, when it first acquired Patriot systems. The initial program, enacted under Law No. 6102, involved the procurement of seven Patriot batteries. The first system was delivered in 2020, with the main equipment for three additional systems delivered between 2021 and 2023. This ongoing development reflects Romania’s commitment to strengthening its military infrastructure.
In a notable display of solidarity, Romania donated one of its Patriot batteries to Ukraine in September 2024, highlighting its role in regional security.
