Patria Armored Vehicle Expansion: 40 Million Euro Investment

**Patria, the Finnish defense industry leader, is set to invest 40 million euros to significantly expand its armored vehicle production facility located in Hämeenlinna.** This ambitious project aims not only to boost production capabilities but also to modernize the existing infrastructure. According to a press release from the company, the expansion will include the addition of a new production facility and a dedicated area for surface treatment. With these enhancements, Patria expects to nearly double the capacity of vehicle manufacturing at the facility.

Preparations for construction have already commenced, with the new production facilities projected to be fully operational by 2027. This expansion comes at a time when Patria has seen a notable increase in its order backlog, particularly driven by its armored vehicle projects. Mikko Leino, Vice President of Operations at Patria, highlighted that this growth will enable the company to fulfill existing orders more promptly and pave the way for the development of new products, such as advanced weapon systems and tracked vehicles. Moreover, he underscored that the expansion is crucial for bolstering the European Union’s Defense Technology and Industrial Base (EDTIB).

Boosting Production Capacity in Europe

Patria is ramping up its production capabilities across Europe, having already secured orders for over 800 of its innovative 6×6 armored vehicles. Notably, more than 200 of these vehicles have been delivered under the Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS) program, which currently involves Finland, Latvia, Sweden, and Germany. Not only are these nations participating, but there is also burgeoning interest from additional European countries looking to engage with Patria.

In addition to its endeavors in the 6×6 segment, Patria is actively engaged in AMV XP 8×8 vehicle projects in various international markets, including Slovakia and Japan. Recently, Finland and Slovenia formalized an agreement for the procurement of Patria’s 8×8 armored modular vehicles for the Slovenian army. Furthermore, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds announced early in February that the government plans to provide military aid in the form of 42 Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers to Ukraine.

Focus on Local Contributions and Technological Advancements

Besides the major facility in Hämeenlinna, Patria maintains a production site in Latvia, where the Valmiera facility for manufacturing 6×6 vehicles was inaugurated in May 2024. This dual facility approach allows Patria to leverage local industry expertise, which is crucial for the pre-series production of armored vehicles. Most vehicle deliveries are crafted in collaboration with local manufacturers, ensuring that Patria’s offerings are not only robust but also tailored to the specific needs of each country.

Additionally, the company has recently unveiled Finland’s first 8×8 self-propelled howitzer, marking further advancements in their product line associated with AMV XP. This development highlights Patria’s commitment to innovation in defense technologies, as they continue to enhance their military capabilities and solidify their position in the global defense market.
