Turkey’s Ambitious NÜKDEN Project

**The Turkish Navy is set to enhance its underwater capabilities significantly with the introduction of a nuclear-powered submarine project, officially named NÜKDEN. This announcement was made during a seminar held at the Istanbul Naval Museum, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s naval military strength. Admiral Ercüment Tatlıoğlu, Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, previously highlighted the importance of this advancement in an interview with Warships magazine, confirming the project’s name.**

During this year’s 12th Naval Systems Seminar, it was confirmed by Rear Admiral Timur Yılmaz that ‘NÜKDEN’, short for ‘Nuclear Propelled Submarine’, signifies a vital leap for Turkey’s military capabilities. Yılmaz emphasized that possessing a nuclear submarine is crucial for national security, deterrence, and jurisdiction as well as for supporting operations in areas of strategic interest.

Strategic Importance of NÜKDEN

The development of nuclear-propelled submarines represents a crucial strategic enhancement to Turkey’s naval fleet. According to Rear Admiral Yılmaz, these submarines will allow for continuous underwater operations without range limitations, thus playing a fundamental role in protecting Turkey’s national aircraft carrier, MUGEM, and its accompanying task groups from underwater threats.

In a recent interview, Admiral Tatlıoğlu shared the historical aspirations of Turkey, stating, “For 139 years, we have longed to develop submarines independently, free from foreign dependency, to fulfill all operational needs. Our ongoing MİLDEN project aims to reduce such dependencies and foster indigenous submarine technologies.”

Future of Turkish Submarine Manufacturing

Construction efforts will continue without interruption at Gölcük Shipyard Command, which has a legacy of nearly 50 years in submarine production. This ongoing commitment reflects Turkey’s aim to safeguard and elevate its submarine heritage, especially following the completion of the REİS class submarines.

Moreover, the successful realization of the NÜKDEN project is seen as essential for enhancing Turkey’s long-term submarine deterrence capabilities. The plan is not just limited to national defense but also aims at establishing Turkey as a medium-sized power with considerable global influence.

Export Potential of Indigenous Developments

Once operational, the NÜKDEN project may also open avenues for exporting these advanced submarines to friendly and allied nations, aligning with Turkey’s broader strategic interests. This export potential highlights Turkey’s ambition to play an influential role on the global stage as a provider of cutting-edge naval technology.

As the defense industry continues to evolve, the focus on indigenous system development will be pivotal for Turkey’s future in military manufacturing. The commitment to technological sovereignty resonates through these submarine projects, with an eye on both defense and economic opportunities.
