Norway Bolsters Defense with K9 Thunder Howitzers
**Norway has announced plans to acquire 24 additional K9 Thunder howitzers from the South Korean defense manufacturer Hanwha Aerospace, with a substantial budget of $534 million allocated for this purchase.** This strategic move aims to double Norway’s fleet of self-propelled howitzers, enhancing the nation’s artillery capabilities amid a challenging security landscape.
The 155 mm howitzers are set to be deployed within a new artillery battalion to be established in the Finnmark Brigade, a key initiative in bolstering Norway’s defenses in the northern regions. This procurement of K9 howitzers is part of a broader defense expenditure plan, proposing a total of $1.7 billion, which also includes investments in naval mine-clearing capabilities and new military vehicles.
Strengthening Defense Infrastructure
Currently, Norway operates 28 tracked K9 howitzers along with 14 K10 ammunition supply vehicles. The Ministry of Defense has indicated that the acquisition of these new howitzers will be executed under an existing contractual option with Hanwha. However, before the procurement can proceed, it requires approval from the Norwegian Parliament (Storting).
Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik underscored the importance of this initiative, stating, “We are facing a serious security policy situation. Therefore, we will request the Storting to approve significant investments in various areas of our Armed Forces and to augment our defense capabilities in accordance with the long-term strategy presented last year.”
Increased Defense Budget and Firepower
In conjunction with the howitzer acquisition, the Norwegian government has proposed a $1.9 billion increase to the defense budget for 2025, bringing the total to approximately $11 billion by October 2024. This budget not only covers the cost of the new howitzer systems but also their spare parts, reflecting a comprehensive approach to military preparedness.
The addition of these howitzers is expected to notably enhance the firepower of Norway’s land forces, raising the overall budget for the country’s 155 mm artillery program to $1.11 billion, thereby underscoring Norway’s commitment to modernizing its military capabilities in response to evolving security challenges.
Regional Military Collaborations
Norway’s decision to invest in the K9 howitzers aligns it with other Baltic nations, such as Poland, Finland, and Estonia, which currently utilize the same artillery systems. This collaboration underscores a collective focus on strengthening regional defense postures amid shared security concerns.
Meanwhile, Norway is also looking into enhancing its naval capabilities, with plans to allocate an additional $390,000 to counter naval mines. Once approved, this will bring the total budget for this mine-clearing initiative to $874,000, which is essential for ensuring operational flexibility in Norwegian waters during potential crises.
Future Preparedness and Global Support
This updated project, initially approved in 2023, aims to incorporate unmanned and autonomous technologies, addressing the inadequacies of previously approved mine-clearing capabilities for current security demands. The expanded scope will ensure the necessary resources for safe passage in geographic waters even during crises or conflicts.
