The Intercontinental Bosphorus Swimming Race in Istanbul made headlines this year for a tragic and mysterious reason. Russian swimmer and coach Nikolai Andreevich Svechnikov disappeared during the event; neither his body nor any trace along the shore has been found. As search efforts enter their fourth day, questions and uncertainties continue to grow.

Experts on the Bosphorus note that the surface current flows from the Black Sea toward the Sea of Marmara, typically pushing swimmers southward. A colder, saltier countercurrent runs along the seabed in the opposite direction, but it is unlikely to affect competitors. Daily current reports are provided in race bulletins before each event.

Professional swimmers familiar with the route say it is almost impossible for a swimmer to be swept into the Black Sea. “At worst, you might drift to Sarayburnu, but you wouldn’t end up in the Black Sea,” one veteran competitor explained. Despite this, some media outlets and social media posts reported searches in the Black Sea, raising further suspicion.

On the day of the race, roughly 2,800 swimmers entered the water simultaneously. While sudden health issues such as heart attack, epilepsy, or cramps remain possible, questions arise: how could someone disappear unnoticed in such a large group?

Participants and observers note that in a crowd this size, any swimmer struggling would almost certainly attract attention. Even a collapse would typically be visible, and currents would likely carry the swimmer toward the shore.

There is also the matter of tracking chips: the devices monitor swim progress but do not have GPS capabilities. Some reports suggest Svechnikov’s chip was found, though he may have removed it voluntarily. Experts note that his exit from the shore would have been recorded.

On social media and forums, darker scenarios have emerged, including conspiracy theories suggesting foul play. These speculations are fueled in part by current Russia–Ukraine tensions. Journalist Nevşin Mengü pointed to this context, drawing criticism online, though she emphasized the importance of considering all possibilities.

Theories range from sudden medical issues to voluntary disappearance, including attempts to seek asylum, or deliberate interference. All scenarios share one point: Svechnikov’s silent disappearance under the watch of safety boats in a crowded Bosphorus swim is highly unusual.

Photos circulating on social media show Svechnikov wearing a CCCP logo, referencing the Soviet sports tradition. Russian media have suggested that his disappearance could carry not only sporting but also political and symbolic implications.

As the search continues, the most basic question remains unanswered:
How did no one notice him among thousands of swimmers?
