Italy Considers Kawasaki P-1 Acquisition

Transition from Old to New Patrol Aircraft
Italy’s maritime surveillance capabilities took a hit following the retirement of its long-serving Atlantique patrol aircraft in 2017. Since that time, the country has introduced ATR 72 aircraft into service, a joint venture between Airbus and local firm Leonardo, as a substitute.
These ATR 72 aircraft have been utilized in joint operations by personnel from both the Italian Air Force and Navy. However, despite their advanced AESA radar systems, they lack the critical anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities, thus being considered a temporary solution until a more robust system can be adopted.
Rising Necessity Amid Increased Naval Activity
The urgent need for more capable maritime patrol options is underscored by the rising naval activities in the Mediterranean, with an increase in operations from both allied and opposing forces. This situation highlights the necessity for Italy to invest in enhanced surveillance and defense capabilities.

Frigate Proposal to Greece
