ASFAT Proposes İstif Class Corvette to Saudi Arabia
**ASFAT has officially submitted a proposal for the export of the İstif class corvette to Saudi Arabia.** This significant announcement was made by Deputy Minister of National Defense Musa Heybet and ASFAT General Manager Behçet Karataş during a press conference held at the TOBB campus, coinciding with Working Journalists Day. The proposal is rooted in the modern design of the İstif class corvette, specifically developed for the Turkish Navy.
The project envisions the construction of five vessels, with two to be manufactured in Turkey and three in Saudi Arabia. Among the notable ships is TCG Istanbul (F-515), the first of its class. While discussions with Saudi Arabia are progressing, it is important to note that the negotiations are not yet finalized, and no contracts have been signed. Currently, the project remains in the business development phase, with further details dependent on the outcomes of ongoing discussions.
Technology Transfer and Production Plans
As part of the proposal, the Saudi side has requested that the technology transfer related to the vessels’ payloads be managed by the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) and Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI). Ongoing discussions are taking place between Turkish defense industry representatives and Saudi officials to facilitate this process.
During the press conference, it was emphasized that the delivery schedule is flexible; if necessary, ship blocks intended for production in Saudi Arabia could also be manufactured in Turkey. Furthermore, in the event of any delays, there is a possibility that the production could shift entirely to Saudi Arabia, ensuring that the project stays on track.
Implications for Turkey’s Defense Industry
Should ASFAT’s proposal gain acceptance from Saudi Arabia, it is expected to significantly enhance Turkey’s export potential within the marine platforms sector. This would not only benefit the Turkish defense industry but also improve the country’s competitive standing in the global market.
The press conference also highlighted the current congestion facing military shipyards in Turkey, prompting the exploration of alternative solutions to prevent delays in production. The strategy of producing the vessels in blocks is a promising approach, as it allows for certain components to be manufactured in civilian shipyards, thereby expediting the overall shipbuilding process.
Ongoing Developments in İstif Class Corvette Production
Relevant activities concerning the construction of the İstif class corvette İZMİR are currently ongoing. The production chain is further supported by an active order for gas turbine engines designated for the İstif class corvettes.
The commitment to advancing these projects demonstrates Turkey’s ambitions in the defense sector, and the collaboration with Saudi Arabia could lead to mutually beneficial outcomes in naval capabilities.
