Saab’s Ambitious Market Expansion Plans for 2023

**Saab, the Swedish manufacturer renowned for its Gripen aircraft, has ambitious plans to broaden the market for its Gripen E/F fighter jets beyond existing customers Colombia and Thailand.** According to a recent report by Flight Global, the company is actively working to tap into new territories as part of its expansion strategy. Saab’s CEO, Micael Johansson, articulated the company’s goal of doubling its Gripen E/F customer base this year by finalizing ongoing negotiations with multiple nations.

The company is particularly focused on concluding discussions with Thailand and Colombia by the end of 2023. Alongside these efforts, Saab also aims for positive outcomes from talks with Peru, as well as NATO members Portugal and Canada. Johansson emphasized the importance of these negotiations, stating, “Last year, we were selected to negotiate a contract with Thailand… My aim is to conclude this contract by the end of this year.” He further mentioned that Colombia’s financing plans allow for deferred payments, facilitating their procurement process.

Negotiations with Thailand and Colombia

Saab has highlighted recent local media reports that suggest a potential deal with the Colombian government is in the works, bolstered by financial backing proposals from the Swedish Export Credit Corporation and the Swedish Export Credit Agency. The Royal Thai Air Force, which currently operates 11 Gripen C/D fighter jets, is expected to add 12 Gripen E/F jets to its fleet, enhancing its aerial capabilities.

Colombia, while not disclosing the exact number of planes it intends to procure, has indicated a requirement for between 16 and 24 new aircraft. Johansson reiterated that securing contracts with Thailand and Colombia would pave the way for attracting more customers to the Gripen E, which is distinguished for its lifecycle costs and performance.

Opportunities in Latin America

Looking beyond its immediate negotiations, Saab sees promising opportunities throughout Latin America. Johansson stated, “There are also sales opportunities in other parts of Latin America in the near future.” Currently, Saab is engaging in discussions with Peru, having submitted a proposal which is now under evaluation. He expressed optimism, highlighting that establishing a strong presence in Brazil and coordinating negotiations in Colombia can significantly boost prospects in Peru.

This strategic approach positions Saab to solidify its foothold in the region, with Johansson stating, “We see this campaign as very important for us. Of course, being present in Brazil and negotiating in Colombia helps the process in Peru.” He concluded with a hopeful note about the success of these initiatives, emphasizing their commitment to providing the best offerings available.
