GÖKDENİZ Close-In Weapon System Enhances Philippine Defense

**The Philippine Department of Defense has unveiled its updated procurement plan, which now includes the GÖKDENİZ Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) ammunition as part of efforts to bolster air defense capabilities.** This initiative comes as the department allocates additional funding for air defense systems in its 2025 procurement strategy. Notably, 35 mm ammunition is set to be procured for the BRP Diego Silang, the second vessel in the Miguel Malvar-class frigates that is equipped with the MBDA VL-MICA air defense system.

The GÖKDENİZ CIWS, utilizing 35 mm ATOM fragmentation ammunition produced by ASELSAN, has been selected for the Miguel Malvar-class frigates. Two of these ships will be outfitted with the GÖKDENİZ systems, reflecting the Philippines’ commitment to enhancing its naval defense capabilities. Previously, ASELSAN delivered these systems to the Korean company HHI, where they were observed aboard various vessels. Following the completion of acceptance activities, the new ships are anticipated to join the Philippine Navy fleet between 2025 and 2026.

Proven Technology and Established Partnerships

Beyond the GÖKDENİZ system, ASELSAN’s weapon towers have been operational in the Philippine Navy for several years. Among these is the SMASH 30 / MUHAFIZ tower, which has also been delivered to the primary contractor HHI. These systems serve as secondary armaments on the Jose Rizal-class frigates, further enhancing the naval capabilities of the Philippines.

The GÖKDENİZ CIWS stands out as a robust point defense system, equipped to neutralize anti-ship missiles targeting the vessels it protects. Featuring an Automatic Beltless Ammunition Feeding Mechanism, the system allows for the simultaneous loading of fragmentation and high-explosive incendiary rounds, enabling operators to select the most appropriate ammunition for various threats.

Advanced Targeting and Firepower

This advanced weapon system includes a stabilized gun turret and an Integrated Tracking Platform, which combines Fire Control Radar and Electro-Optical sensors for accurate target tracking. Additionally, a 3D Search Radar option enhances its operational capabilities further, providing real-time situational awareness.

The GÖKDENİZ features a 35 mm KDC-02 type twin-barrel weapon system, capable of delivering an impressive rate of fire at 1,100 rounds per minute. This firepower allows the system to effectively defend against a variety of threats, including anti-ship missiles, helicopters, aircraft, drones, and surface vessels.

International Interest and Future Prospects

The GÖKDENİZ CIWS has garnered significant attention on the international stage, emerging as a favored defense solution among various navies, including that of the Philippines. As nations seek to enhance their maritime defense capabilities, the GÖKDENİZ system stands out for its reliability and effectiveness.

Furthermore, there are indications of potential additional procurements, particularly with regard to T-129 ATAK helicopters, hinting at the Philippines’ ongoing commitment to modernizing its defense forces. The integration of these advanced systems signifies a substantial leap forward in the country’s defense strategy.
