Earlier, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler had announced that the aircraft, which recently participated in a military exercise in Qatar, would arrive in Turkey for evaluation by Turkish authorities. As planned, the jets entered Turkish airspace earlier today and completed their landing at Mürted.

High-Level Defense Meeting in Ankara
Coinciding with the arrival of the jets, Defense Minister Yaşar Güler hosted the UK’s Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle, in Ankara. Eagle’s visit is believed to center on discussions regarding Turkey’s potential procurement of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. Turkey is reportedly planning to acquire 40 brand-new Typhoon jets for its Air Force.

The visiting aircraft were received and inspected by senior Turkish military and government officials, including Air Force Commander General Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu, Deputy Minister of Defense Şuay Alpay, and other military personnel.

The EF-2000 Eurofighter Typhoon Project
The Eurofighter Typhoon project was initiated as a collaborative effort among European nations to develop a next-generation fighter aircraft. While the original consortium included the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, France withdrew from the project early on to focus on developing its own fighter jet, the Rafale.

The remaining partners continued, resulting in the EF-2000 Typhoon. The intellectual property rights for the project are distributed as follows: 33% to the UK, 33% to Germany, 21% to Italy, and 13% to Spain.

The consortium is represented by major defense contractors: BAE Systems for the UK, Airbus Defence & Space for Germany and Spain, and Leonardo for Italy. The project has created a significant supply chain and generated extensive employment opportunities across these nations.

To date, over 550 Eurofighter Typhoons have been successfully delivered to seven countries: Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, Austria, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.

The visit of the Typhoons to Turkey and the high-level discussions in Ankara signal growing defense collaboration between the two nations, with potential implications for Turkey’s strategic capabilities in the near future.
