Bayraktar KIZILELMA: Turkey’s Leading Combat Drone

**Turkey has made significant strides in its defense technology, as evidenced by the successful flight tests of the Bayraktar KIZILELMA, the nation’s first unmanned combat aircraft. This innovative drone, identified by tail number TC-ÖZB3, completed its initial flight test on September 25, 2024, at the AKINCI Flight Training and Test Center in Çorlu, Tekirdağ. The production prototype, Bayraktar KIZILELMA PT-3, was delivered to the facility in July 2024, where it underwent preliminary tests including engine start, automatic taxi, run tests, and wheel braking tests, all of which were executed flawlessly.

The KIZILELMA program continues to progress according to its testing schedule, with another successful flight test conducted on January 18, 2025. During this test, system identification activities were carried out effectively, showcasing the drone’s readiness for operational deployment. The advancements in KIZILELMA technology reflect Turkey’s commitment to enhancing its aerial capabilities and maintaining strategic autonomy in defense.

Revolutionary Capabilities for Naval Operations

One of the standout features of the Bayraktar KIZILELMA is its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability, particularly on aircraft carriers. This functionality is set to transform battlefield dynamics, enabling the drone to operate from naval vessels like the TCG ANADOLU, which is currently undergoing testing. Baykar’s General Manager, Haluk Bayraktar, announced that they are targeting 2025 for the first flight of KIZILELMA from TCG ANADOLU. This capability is expected to enhance Turkey’s operational reach and effectiveness in overseas missions, thereby strengthening its position in protecting its maritime interests.

The strategic importance of KIZILELMA cannot be understated; its ability to operate from aircraft carriers will allow Turkey to project power and assert its presence in critical regions. In addition to KIZILELMA, Baykar is also working on deploying the Bayraktar TB3 drone on TCG ANADOLU, further expanding Turkey’s naval drone capabilities.

Rapid Development and Technological Advances

The Bayraktar KIZILELMA project commenced in 2021 and has been entirely funded by Baykar’s resources. The production prototype with tail number TC-ÖZB was unveiled on November 14, 2022, and after extensive ground testing at the AKINCI Center, it successfully took to the skies for the first time on December 14, 2022. Achieving flight status in just a year is a remarkable feat that highlights the efficiency and expertise of the Baykar engineering team.

Throughout the development of KIZILELMA, the team made significant modifications based on lessons learned from earlier prototypes. These enhancements included structural refinements and improvements in avionics architecture, leading to a more capable and sophisticated drone. The integration of an afterburning engine has positioned KIZILELMA to potentially reach supersonic speeds, allowing for superior maneuverability during high-speed operations. The incorporation of advanced AESA radar technology will also provide exceptional situational awareness, enabling the drone to undertake complex missions with increased efficacy.

Future Investments in Defense Technology

In light of its ambitious goals, Baykar has earmarked a substantial budget of $1 billion for the continued development of KIZILELMA. This financial commitment underscores the strategic importance that Turkey places on advancing its defense technologies and ensuring its military remains at the forefront of innovation. As the global landscape evolves, investing in state-of-the-art unmanned systems like KIZILELMA is crucial for maintaining national security and operational superiority.

As the Bayraktar KIZILELMA prepares for its future operational roles, it stands as a testament to Turkey’s growing capabilities in defense technology. With its cutting-edge features and strategic mission profile, KIZILELMA is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of aerial combat and naval operations.
