Azerbaijan-Pakistan Defense Cooperation Strengthens
**Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev recently highlighted the strengthening ties between Azerbaijan and Pakistan in the defense sector. During the Azerbaijan-Pakistan Business Forum held in Baku on February 24, Aliyev emphasized the ongoing discussions about their collaborative efforts in developing defense industry capabilities. He stated, “We discussed our beautiful cooperation in the field of defense industry. Our work on joint production facilities is also ongoing,” indicating a commitment to enhancing military collaboration between the two nations.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif of Pakistan echoed Aliyev’s sentiments, expressing that significant strides have been made in defense cooperation over the years. He mentioned that the focus is now on establishing joint production facilities and ventures, which he deemed a priority for the upcoming delegation’s visit to Pakistan in April. Sharif confidently stated, “When you come to Pakistan, we will be able to sign an agreement in this area as well,” showcasing the urgency and importance of these developments.
Joint Production Facilities on the Horizon
According to reports from OC Media, President Aliyev expressed satisfaction with the current agreements and the quality of defense equipment supplied by Pakistan. He remarked that Azerbaijan is ‘very pleased’ with these products and confirmed that procurement would continue. This underscores Azerbaijan’s reliance on Pakistan as a vital ally in the defense sector.
The partnership between Azerbaijan and Pakistan has been robust since Azerbaijan gained independence in 1991. A significant milestone occurred in September 2024 when the two countries signed a $1.6 billion agreement for the procurement of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, produced jointly by Pakistan and China. The first deliveries of these aircraft were reported in the same month, marking a new era in Azerbaijan’s air force capabilities.
Geopolitical Implications in the Region
While Azerbaijan solidifies its partnership with Pakistan, regional dynamics are shifting, particularly with Armenia increasing its military cooperation with India.
