İbrahim Kalın, the head of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT), paid a visit to the southeastern province of Hakkari as part of ongoing efforts under the “Terror-Free Türkiye” initiative. His visit included stops in Hakkari city center, as well as the districts of Yüksekova and Çukurca.
During his visit, Kalın held high-level meetings with Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik, Second Army Commander General Levent Ergün, and other senior military and civilian officials. The discussions reportedly focused on the security of Türkiye’s borders with Iraq, Iran, and Syria, recent developments in the region, and the current status of forward military positions along the frontier.
In addition to reviewing the measures taken to secure the area, Kalın also conducted an on-site inspection at the military outpost numbered 1754, located in northern Iraq.
Regional Diplomacy in Erbil

Prior to his visit to Hakkari, Kalın traveled to Erbil for a series of diplomatic meetings with top officials of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). He met with Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani, KRG President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
One of the key agenda items in the Erbil meetings was the “Terror-Free Türkiye” initiative. Both sides discussed coordinated steps aimed at eliminating terrorist threats in the broader region and ensuring long-term stability across shared borders.
Kalın’s visits come as Türkiye intensifies its counterterrorism efforts both domestically and across its southern borders, with a focus on strengthening regional cooperation and securing lasting peace.
