F-16 Block 70 Bulgaria: A New Era in Air Defense
**The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense has announced the arrival of the first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet procured from the United States.** This significant development was confirmed via a post on their official social media account. The country has ordered a total of 16 F-16 Block 70 jets, which are set to replace the aging fleet of Russian MiG-29 warplanes. Notably, the inaugural flight of the first F-16 Block 70 took place last October, signaling a new chapter in Bulgaria’s air defense capabilities.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov heralded this momentous occasion, stating on social media, “A historic day for Bulgaria! The arrival of the first F-16 Block 70 marks a key step in strengthening our national security and modernizing our Air Force. New capabilities for a stronger and more advanced defense! This project reflects the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States.” The arrival of this advanced aircraft is seen as a pivotal move towards bolstering the nation’s defense readiness.
Ceremony and Transition
The first jet was officially received during a ceremony at the Lockheed Martin facility in Greenville, South Carolina, held at the end of January. On January 31, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov and other dignitaries were present to witness the formal delivery of the aircraft. Following this event, the jet is expected to be transferred to Bulgaria in April, reinforcing the timeline of this significant acquisition.
This event follows three months after the F-16C Block 70 conducted its maiden flight, marking a successful beginning to the production that commenced in January 2024. Under the initial contract, Bulgaria has secured 8 F-16C/D Block 70 aircraft, with an additional 8 jets scheduled for delivery in 2027. Collectively, these combat aircraft will fully equip the Bulgarian Air Force (BuAF) and enhance its operational capabilities.
Training and Strategic Partnerships
Training for pilots and maintenance personnel is already underway, utilizing 2 F-16D jets provided as part of the U.S. Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program. This training is critical to ensure that the Bulgarian personnel are fully prepared to operate and maintain their new fleet effectively. The F-16C/D Block 70 deal is integrated into a ten-year roadmap as part of the Defense Cooperation Agreement established with the U.S. in October 2020.
This partnership builds upon a previous agreement between the two nations from 2006, underlining the long-term commitment to enhancing Bulgaria’s defense capabilities. Additionally, steps are being taken to strengthen border security, with a joint police force being formed along the Turkey-Bulgaria border through cooperation with fellow EU countries.
