Patria Unveils the New ARVE 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer

**In a significant development for the Finnish defense sector, Patria has introduced its first 155mm self-propelled howitzer system known as ARVE at the Arctic Event in Rovaniemi, which took place from March 17 to 19, 2025. This innovative system features an 8×8 truck-mounted configuration that is specifically designed to fulfil the projected operational requirements of the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF). In a landscape where indirect fire capabilities are becoming increasingly critical for modern military engagements, Patria’s ARVE system promises to enhance the artillery effectiveness of national forces.**

Patria’s Deputy General Manager, Jukka Holkeri, highlighted the importance of this announcement, stating, “This concept has been on the table for a long time, but it hadn’t been officially launched. Both the truck and the weapon systems are ready to go, and with artillery’s growing significance in contemporary battlefields, it was time to unify these components.” This unveiling indicates not only the readiness of the equipment but also Patria’s commitment to modernizing Finland’s defense capabilities.

Performance Capabilities of the ARVE Howitzer

The new ARVE howitzer boasts a transport capacity of 24 rounds, allowing for sustained operations in the field. Its effective firing range extends to 40 kilometers using standard ammunition, making it a formidable asset in artillery warfare. The weapon system’s versatile elevation angle ranges from -3° to +60°, with a firing mode that allows for adjustments between +12° and +60°. Furthermore, this self-propelled howitzer can engage targets in a sector from -90° to +50°, providing a tactical advantage in both direct and indirect fire scenarios.

One of the key features of the ARVE system is its rapid repositioning capability. After executing a firing mission, the howitzer can relocate in approximately 45 seconds, significantly reducing the risk of counter-battery fire. The system is integrated into a Sisu E13TP 8×8 all-terrain truck, measuring 11.5 meters in length, 2.6 meters in width, and 3.5 meters in height. It has a maximum combat weight of under 28 tons and is powered by a robust 500-horsepower engine, achieving speeds exceeding 100 km/h with a cruising range of over 600 km.

Prototype Development and Future Prospects

The ARVE showcased at the Arctic Event is currently a prototype, having been developed over the past year by engineers working on the integration of the weapon and platform. Jukka Holkeri remarks that the initial phase of this program is nearing completion, with all systems integration successfully finalized. Following a series of mobility tests, the ARVE is set to conduct its first live fire tests by the end of this year. Reports indicate that these tests are being executed at an industrial level, demonstrating a thorough approach to operational readiness.

In parallel, Patria is exploring enhancements to the ARVE system’s effectiveness with plans for incorporating an automatic placement system connected to a weapon terminal and ballistic calculator. Additionally, the integration of an automatic loading system is under consideration, promising to streamline operations further. Notably, Patria is not only focused on the ARVE but has also signed a second contract for the F-35 program, along with supplying 6×6 wheeled armored vehicles to Sweden, showcasing its extensive capabilities in the defense sector.
