Poland Secures Apache Helicopter Rental
**Poland’s Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz recently announced the signing of contracts for the rental of eight AH-64D Apache helicopters from the United States.** This significant move comes as part of Poland’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military capabilities. The contracts were formalized during a ceremony attended by Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Bejda, who oversees the technical modernization of the Polish Armed Forces, along with representatives from the U.S.
Under the terms of the agreement, Poland will utilize the eight AH-64D helicopters as a temporary measure until the arrival of new AH-64E models. The total estimated cost of this rental agreement is around $300 million. Furthermore, plans are in motion to establish a follow-up agreement for the rented helicopters later this year.
Previous Rental and Training Initiatives
This latest contract is not Poland’s first foray into renting Apache helicopters. On May 5, 2023, former Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak announced that Poland would secure eight AH-64D helicopters during a visit to the United States, receiving assurances from U.S. Army officials. This announcement highlighted Poland’s commitment to enhancing its air combat capabilities.
Additionally, Błaszczak revealed on July 21 that a training cycle for Polish pilots would commence on August 25 in the U.S. This training is based on an agreement facilitated by the Air Force Inspectorate, ensuring that Polish personnel are well-prepared to operate these advanced helicopters.
Training Progress and Future Deliveries
On November 17, 2023, the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces confirmed that Polish pilots from the 1st Aviation Brigade in Inowrocław successfully conducted their inaugural training flights with the AH-64E helicopters at Fort Novosel in Alabama. This training marks a crucial step in integrating the Apache helicopters into Poland’s military operations.
Looking ahead, by August 13, 2024, a contract was finalized for the delivery of 96 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. This comprehensive agreement includes logistics support, maintenance, and specialized training for pilots and technical staff. The total contract value is approximately $10 billion, with deliveries projected to take place between 2028 and 2032.
