MKE National Naval Gun: Key Updates on TCG GAZİANTEP
**The TCG GAZİANTEP frigate has seen significant upgrades with the successful implementation of a domestically produced gun barrel by MKE.** The Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced via social media that the frigate’s foreign-sourced main battery gun barrel was replaced with a locally manufactured one. This development aligns with Turkey’s ongoing efforts to enhance its naval capabilities, particularly during the MAVİ VATAN-2025 exercise held from January 7 to 16.
During the MAVİ VATAN-2025 exercise, the Turkish Naval Forces effectively utilized the new domestic gun barrel, which is a 76 mm model produced by MKE. This gun replaces the previous barrels sourced from the Italian company Oto Melara, which were standard across all GABYA class frigates. The successful localization of these gun barrels marks a significant milestone in Turkey’s defense industry.
The MKE’s domestic 76 mm naval gun has also been integrated into the TCG BEYKOZ corvette following successful land test firings. This integration has paved the way for sea tests where the naval gun demonstrated its capabilities in bombardment, surface fire, and anti-aircraft operations. The project reflects a cooperative effort involving the Ministry of National Defense, Istanbul Shipyard Command, and MKE AŞ.
In addition, the TCG AKHİSAR (P-1220) has become the first vessel to be equipped with the 76/62 mm National Naval Gun, which is now prepared for further port and sea trials. The localization efforts for this advanced naval weapon began years ago and involved extensive R&D to ensure that it meets the operational demands of the Turkish Navy.
The National Naval Gun comprises 17,000 parts, showcasing the complexity of its design and manufacturing. Within a year, MKE accomplished prototype production and successfully completed various tests, including land firing and acceptance tests at sea. This rapid development cycle highlights MKE’s capability in defense innovation.
With a firing rate of 80 rounds per minute and a maximum range of 20 kilometers, the National Naval Gun is a versatile weapon system. It is designed for multiple roles, including air defense, surface warfare, and land bombardment, making it a critical asset for naval operations.
The gun’s specifications are impressive, featuring a traverse limit of ±360°, an elevation limit of -15° to +85°, and a digital control console. It is also equipped with advanced cooling systems and operates under specific power requirements, showcasing its technological sophistication.
MKE’s collaboration with TAIS Shipyards and STM further strengthens the development of the national naval gun, reinforcing Turkey’s commitment to self-sufficiency in defense technology. As these advancements continue, the TCG GAZİANTEP and other naval platforms will be better equipped to meet future challenges.
