General Dynamics GDELS Announces Delivery of New Artillery Barrel
**General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) recently announced the successful delivery of a 155mm/52 caliber artillery barrel to the United States.** The announcement was made on Tuesday, March 25, outlining that the company’s Santa Bárbara Sistemas division would complete the delivery to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) by the end of the month.
The artillery barrel is notably similar to those utilized by the Spanish Army’s SIAC 155 howitzers, which had previously been exported to different international clients. Manufactured entirely at GDELS’s facility in Trubia, Asturias, the barrel is set to be used as a firing test platform at the ammunition excellence center, focusing on developing new types of munitions, shells, and propellant gases.
Strategic Importance of the Delivery
GDELS has underscored that Santa Bárbara Sistemas stands as the sole entity within General Dynamics with the capability to produce large caliber weapon systems. This facility not only excels in the design and manufacturing of artillery barrels but is also among the few global establishments that can oversee the complete production process, from initial design to final qualification.
The company stated, “This is a result of GDELS’s continuous investments in Trubia to develop and enhance this strategic capability.” Such advancements are crucial as demand for 155 mm artillery systems grows amidst increasing operational expectations and geopolitical tensions.
